Getting Booked: From Open Mics to Paid Gigs

The Path From Free to Paid

Nobody starts getting paid. That's normal. The path looks like this:

Amateur/Open MicRegular RotationGuest SpotsBooked & Paid

Each stage has its own work. Here's what to focus on at each level.

Stage 1: Amateur Nights & Open Mics

This is where every queen starts. Most cities have at least one drag venue with a regular open mic or amateur night.

How to find them:

  • Search Instagram for "drag night" + your city
  • Ask at local LGBTQ+ bars
  • Check Facebook event listings
  • Go to shows as an audience member and ask the queens performing

What to do:

  • Show up prepared (full look, song ready, on time)
  • Be respectful to other performers
  • Thank the host personally
  • Take photos and post them (tag the venue)
  • Ask for feedback from experienced queens (most will help)

Goal: Do 5-10 amateur performances before expecting anything more.

Stage 2: Building a Reputation

After your first few shows, focus on becoming someone venues WANT to have back.

The Reliability Factor

Venues book queens who:

  • Show up on time (early, actually)
  • Come in a complete look
  • Don't cause drama with other performers
  • Bring their own audience (even 5-10 friends counts)

Build Your Book

Create a portfolio:

  • 3-5 high-quality photos in different looks
  • Video clips of your best performances
  • A short bio that captures your persona
  • Active social media with consistent posting

Network Correctly

  • Attend other queens' shows (they notice who supports them)
  • Don't ask to be booked at every show you attend — build genuine relationships first
  • Offer to help with shows (door, hosting, setup) — it gets you known backstage

Stage 3: Getting Booked

The Ask

When you're ready (and you'll feel it), here's how to reach out:

To a show producer/host:

"Hey [name], I've loved coming to [show name] — the energy is always incredible. I'd love to be considered for a guest spot if you're ever looking for performers. Here's my portfolio [link]. Thanks for what you do for the scene!"

That's it. Short, respectful, with a link to your work. Let them come to you after that.

What to Charge

  • Open mics: Free (you're getting stage time)
  • Guest spots: $50-100 or tips
  • Regular rotation: $75-200 per show
  • Headlining: $200-500+
  • Corporate/private events: $500-2000+

These vary wildly by city and venue. Ask other queens in your market what's standard.

Negotiation Tips

  • Always get the deal in writing (even a text confirmation counts)
  • Ask about: pay, time you're expected, number of songs, dress code
  • Know if tips are yours to keep or if there's a split
  • Never undercut another queen's rate to get booked — it hurts everyone

Building Towards Sustainability

Most queens don't make a living solely from performance. Common income stacks:

  • Performances (shows, events, corporate)
  • Hosting (brunches, trivia, bingo)
  • Teaching (makeup classes, drag workshops)
  • Social media (once you build following)
  • Merchandise (prints, stickers, custom pieces)
  • Private events (birthdays, bachelorettes)

The queens who build sustainable careers diversify early.
